Treasury Select Committee visit Citizens Advice Nottingham

Members of the Treasury Select Committee, Nicky Morgan MP and John Mann MP visited Citizens Advice Nottingham and District in February to listen to views of Debt advisors and managers, as part of their inquiry into household expenses.

The inquiry looked into the state of UK household balance sheets, including whether households are saving adequately in the current economic environment, problematic and over-indebtedness, inter-generational issues, lifetime financial planning and the effectiveness of the market in financing solutions and products to low income households.

Debt advisors and managers urged the MPs to consider the impact of high cost credit lenders, as well as government debt like council tax arrears – a debt issue many of Citizens Advice clients are struggling with.

Stella Howard, Specialist Services Manager said

“Whilst credit card debts are important, many of our clients are struggling to pay priority debts like council tax and rent arrears. This is by far the biggest area of concern for us”

“Over 75% of payment arrangements for council tax are maintained for 12 months or more. Aggressive collection tactics like Bailiffs, don’t provide people with the support and help they need. “
